About Deltranik
A small, independent educational project dedicated to the methodical study of Western calligraphic traditions — from Roman square capitals to Renaissance italic.
Why Deltranik Was Started
In early 2021, a small group of calligraphy practitioners in the Netherlands noticed a recurring pattern among self-taught learners who reached out to them for guidance. Most had watched dozens of tutorials, bought expensive nibs and inks, and practised for months — yet their letterforms remained inconsistent. The problem was not effort or materials. It was sequence.
Without a structured path through the historical scripts, learners were attempting Gothic textura before mastering basic pen-angle discipline, or jumping into italic without understanding the minuscule letter proportions that italic evolved from. The scattered nature of available online content — excellent in isolation, chaotic in aggregate — left people with fragments of knowledge that did not connect.
Deltranik was created to solve that specific problem. The name is borrowed from an old Armenian word for a student's writing slate, reflecting the project's commitment to foundational learning. We built a sequenced curriculum that follows the actual historical progression of Western scripts, because that progression is itself the best teacher: each script introduced new tools, new conventions, and new aesthetic ideals that informed the scripts that followed.
This remains a modest, self-funded educational project. We do not offer certifications, consulting, career advice, or professional services of any kind. Our role is strictly informational — to organise existing calligraphic knowledge into a path that learners can follow at their own pace.
Our Mission
Deltranik exists to make the study of Western calligraphy accessible, methodical, and historically grounded. We believe that understanding the evolution of the Latin letterform — from the Trajan Column inscription to the Renaissance chancery hand — is not merely an academic exercise. It is the most effective way to develop genuine skill with the broad-edge pen.
Our mission is narrow by design. We focus exclusively on the Western calligraphic canon, primarily broad-edge scripts from the Roman period through the sixteenth century. We do not cover pointed-pen scripts, modern brush-pen lettering, or East Asian calligraphic traditions — not because these are less valuable, but because doing one thing well requires saying no to many things.
We commit to presenting information clearly, acknowledging the limits of our scope, and never implying that completing our modules will lead to professional employment, income, or any outcome beyond a deeper understanding of the lettering arts.
Our Contributors
Deltranik is maintained by a small team of calligraphy practitioners and historians. No one here holds the title of "expert" lightly — each contributor brings years of focused study in a specific area of the Western lettering tradition.
Hendrik V.
Curriculum Director & Script Analyst
(MA Palaeography, Leiden University) Hendrik has studied the evolution of Latin minuscule scripts for nine years, with particular attention to the Carolingian reform and its influence on later book hands. He designed the sequential structure of the Deltranik curriculum and authored the ductus analysis modules. Before this project, he spent four years cataloguing manuscript fragments at a university library in Utrecht. He is quietly obsessive about pen-angle consistency and has been known to spend an entire afternoon on a single letter 'g'.
Elena M.
Materials Specialist & Content Author
(Dip. Conservation Studies, University of Amsterdam) Elena's background in paper and ink conservation gives her an unusual perspective on calligraphic materials — she understands ink behaviour at the chemical level, not just the practical one. She authored the ink preparation and material selection modules, and manages the Resources section. Her seven years of experience include a stint restoring seventeenth-century administrative manuscripts in the Gelderland provincial archive. She insists that most calligraphy frustration is a materials problem, not a skill problem.
Thomas S.
Gilding & Decoration Module Lead
(Independent Calligrapher, 12 years practice) Thomas came to calligraphy through bookbinding and has focused for eight years on the decorative arts of manuscript production — raised gilding with gesso, flat gold leaf application, and versal letter construction. He leads the advanced modules on gilding and simple illumination. His training was largely informal, built through extended study under a retired scribe in Bruges and painstaking reproduction of fifteenth-century exemplars. Thomas tends to measure things in nib-widths rather than millimetres.
Guiding Principles
Sequence Over Speed
Every module builds on the one before it. We resist the temptation to let learners skip ahead to visually impressive scripts before the underlying pen skills are secure. A Carolingian minuscule 'a' executed with correct ductus is more valuable than a dozen Gothic capitals drawn by guesswork.
History as Teacher
We teach scripts in chronological order because each major Western hand emerged as a response to specific cultural, political, or technological conditions. Understanding why Uncial gave way to half-uncial, or why Humanist minuscule revived Carolingian proportions, gives the learner a framework that pure technique instruction cannot provide.
Honesty About Scope
We do not claim to be comprehensive. Our curriculum covers seven scripts — a meaningful selection, but not the full breadth of the Western canon. We do not cover pointed-pen hands, copperplate, Spencerian, or any modern brush-pen styles. Knowing what we omit is as important as knowing what we include.
No False Promises
We will never suggest that studying with Deltranik leads to professional employment, freelance income, or any career outcome. Calligraphy can enrich a life in countless ways — as a meditative practice, an intellectual pursuit, a creative outlet — but we are not in a position to promise anything beyond the learning itself.
